The Times Union says that AMD has assured local leaders that the fab in New York will still be coming. Ruiz was in Albany just a few weeks ago, meeting at the Capitol with Gov. David Paterson and other legislative leaders. A spokesman for Paterson did not return calls seeking comment.
Neither Ruiz nor others at AMD have said how the asset smart strategy works. It used to be called "asset light," fueling speculation that it would entail AMD selling its manufacturing sites to focus on chip design and engineering in what's known as a "fabless" business model.
AMD spokesman Travis Bullard has said that AMD will not transform itself into a fabless company, although he would not rule out the possibility that AMD could partner with another company on Luther Forest.
